Urgent adoption appeal for Smokey
We are appealing for a special home for Smokey, a seven-month-old Mastiff who came to our Rehoming Centre.
After his Canine Carers noticed issues when he was walking and after veterinary examination it is suspected that he has a spinal condition commonly known as ‘Wobblers Syndrome’ because of the wobbly or clumsy movement that affected dogs usually display.
Vets say his condition, which affects his neck and upper back, could progress quickly over the next few years, although it is unknown how soon this will happen.
As Wobblers is often debilitating, and dogs can have difficulty walking or standing as it progresses, this means Smokey’s adopters need to be prepared for his life potentially being a lot shorter than the average dog. This means we are looking for an adult only family with children over 16 years of age, to give him a home for however long his life may be.
Smokey is described as a “loveable big softy” by her carers and although he is a sensitive dog his giddy and playful personality shines through once he gets to know people. Despite his condition he loves running and racing around with other dogs and playing tug with his favourite people. Smokey is an intelligent boy and is eager to learn. Some of his favourite things include playing fetch, getting belly rubs and food.
The ideal home for Smokey would have a large, secure garden where he can play. Because he drags his paws he will need to have access to a garden with grass because it is a softer surface for his paws. He could also live with another dog in his family.
Potential adopters would need to have a few meetings with Smokey at our rehoming centre in Finglas, but as his Canine Carers say he will be an “amazing addition to any family.”
