June’s Spotlight on Dog Friendly Ireland Day 2018

On Friday, June 22nd, Dogs Trust celebrated the first ever national Dog Friendly Ireland Day! Dogs Trust wants to help Ireland become the best country in the world for dogs and their owners, so we asked organisations of all types, to take part in Dog Friendly Ireland Day. While we asked establishments to allow dogs and their owner’s access to their premises for this one day, we also encouraged dog owners to go out and visit their favourite Dog Friendly spot and join in the celebrations!

So, why have a Dog Friendly Ireland Day you might ask? Well, Dogs Trust believes there are so many reasons that Ireland should welcome our beloved four-legged friends in more public spaces and venues. A multitude of studies have shown how dogs can enrich and benefit our human lives, and as dog owners and lovers, we can certainly testify to that! A Dog Friendly Ireland would have so many more far-reaching positive benefits on Irish dogs and their owners too. If we lived in a society where dogs were more welcome in workplaces, food serving establishments and rental accommodation, not only would existing dog owners face fewer barriers in keeping their dogs in their lives, but it could also encourage many more people to become dog owners!

We were absolutely blown away by the number of people who wanted to sign-up and join us on this special day – so much so that we had to close off our sign-up form early as we couldn’t keep up with the demand! 500 individuals and organisations received one of our Dog Friendly goody bags, with many more people still taking part in the day. Our social media feeds were full of wonderful photos of all the fabulous locations that became Dog Friendly for the day! We saw dogs in food-serving establishments, offices, art galleries, shops, hotels and many more. And, those who couldn’t make it out that day, shared pictures of them spending quality time with the four-legged friend on their local Dog Friendly beach, in the dog park or even just their back-garden.

We were overwhelmed by the positive reaction we received, we almost broke the internet!! Everyone joined the #DogFriendlyIrelandDay conversation when sharing their photos and judging by the pictures we saw it definitely seemed that man and pup alike thoroughly enjoyed their day.

After the success of Dog Friendly Ireland Day and the positive responses received, we hope that many more organisations will consider becoming more Dog Friendly on a regular basis and that soon every day will be a Dog Friendly Ireland Day! We’re already really looking forward to 2019 and our new favourite day of the year!
