National Chipping Week 2017

Today we launched our Nationwide Microchipping Awareness Campaign. The campaign will be run from the 14th – 20th of August in association with Government approved database

Having your dog microchipped is now required by law, although shockingly, only around 40% of dogs are compliant*! Dogs Trust wants to ensure that all dogs can be returned safely to their homes if they get lost. That is why this year Dogs Trust will be offering free microchipping clinics in Maxi Zoo locations around Dublin and Kildare, and a Microchip Certificate Amnesty for dog owners all around the country.

Free Chipping Clinics will be taking place in the following Maxi Zoo stores:

  • Leopardstown – August 14th
  • Maynooth – August 15th
  • Tallaght – August 17th
  • Finglas – August 18th

Booking a place at these events is essential so please visit the Events Section of the Dogs Trust website for more information. As microchipping your dogs and the possession of a microchipping certificate is a legal requirement since 2016, Dogs Trust are offering free certificates to dog owners who have their dogs microchipped but do not yet have a certificate. People needing to update their contact details and obtain a fresh microchipping certificate can also avail of the microchipping certificate amnesty.

If you are not sure of your dog’s microchip number or if your dog is microchipped already, pop into your local veterinary practice and ask to have your dog scanned with a microchip reader.

Remember if you change address or phone number, you must update your details straight away with your dog’s microchip database provider!

Speaking about this year’s National Chipping Week, Suzie Carley, Executive Director at Dogs Trust Ireland said;

"Compulsory Microchipping and Certification has huge benefits for dogs and their owners, by ensuring a much loved lost dog is returned in a timely and efficient manner thus reducing the stress and trauma to owner and dog alike. Ensuring every dog is microchipped will ease the pressure in dog pounds throughout Ireland by reducing the number of stray dogs entering the pound system. Mandatory registration and certification also helps to promote responsible dog ownership. We are delighted to be able to offer a nationwide Microchipping Certificate Amnesty to dog owners across Ireland."
