Dogs Trust welcomes Government move to eliminate ‘blanket bans’ on pets in tenancy agreements

Dogs Trust, Ireland’s largest dog welfare charity, has welcomed news that the Government’s Housing Action Plan includes steps to end ‘blanket bans’ on pets in tenancy agreements. The move, which is expected to begin with Approved Housing Body properties, is an important first step towards ensuring that no one in Ireland has to face the heartbreaking decision of giving up a beloved pet just to keep a roof over their head.
Too many renters in Ireland have found themselves in this impossible situation. One of the main reasons people contact Dogs Trust to give up their dog is because they have to move to a new home that won’t allow their beloved pet.
In fact, last year alone, the charity received more than one call or email every single day (431 in total) from people who were devastated to learn they couldn’t bring their dog with them to their new home — a staggering 112% increase over the past five years. Sadly, the trend has continued this year, with many families still unable to find pet-friendly accommodation. Previous analysis by Dogs Trust has also shown that fewer than 1 in 10 rental listings on Daft.ie allow pets.
Dogs Trust Ireland has been calling for change for years and made a further plea to the Government this year by launching a petition calling for an end to blanket pet bans that drew over 20,000 signatures from dog lovers across the country. The charity has highlighted this huge outpouring of public support in its engagement with Government to highlight just how important pets are to people’s lives.
Commenting in reaction to news reports about the potential measure in the Government’s Housing Action Plan, Sarah Lynch, Policy Manager at Dogs Trust, said: “A dog isn’t ‘just a pet’ – they’re family. No one should have to choose between their dog or their home but sadly that is the reality for many people who rent. Dogs Trust has been campaigning on this issue for many years including our petition which over 20,000 people supported earlier this year, and we welcome this first step forward.
“While we understand the initial rollout will apply to Approved Housing Body properties, we truly hope this is just the beginning and it’s extended into private tenancy agreements too. We’re grateful to the Department and the Minister for taking this first important step.”
Dogs Trust looks forward to working with the Government and housing providers to help make Ireland a more compassionate and pet-friendly place, so no one has to choose between their dog and their home.
