We Welcome the Government Announcement Regarding Greyhound Funding Contingencies
We are pleased that Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and The Green Party have all recognised that state funding for the greyhound industry will be conditional upon welfare standards being upheld and traceability being in place.
Commenting on the announcement, Becky Bristow, Executive Director, Dogs Trust Ireland said:
“We look forward to working with the Government to ensure the welfare of all greyhounds becomes a matter of priority for the Irish Greyhound sector. Dogs Trust and other welfare charities have worked tirelessly to ensure the welfare of greyhounds is at the forefront of the greyhound sector and Government policy and funding of the sector – this is yet another step in our journey to ensure greyhounds are properly protected. We look forward to seeing the finer details on how this new measure will be enforced and upheld to ensure the highest welfare standards for our beautiful Irish Greyhounds”
The Programme for Government also states that they are committed to fully implementing the Greyhound Racing Act 2019, strengthening integrity in the industry, and providing for a new system of traceability.
