Get Your Dog Microchipped

Microchipping is recognised as the most effective and secure way of permanently identifying a pet. A unique identification number is registered to the animal and the owner's details are placed on a Government approved database.

Since the 1st of April, 2016 it is a legal requirement to have all dogs in Ireland microchipped. To be fully compliant with the legislation you must take the following 3 steps:

1. Have your dog microchipped by a registered implanter.

2. Have your details registered on a Government approved database (the microchip implanter is responsible for this).

3. Be in possession of a Microchipping Certificate.

At present there are only four Government approved microchipping database providers in Ireland:

  • Animark
  • Fido
  • Irish Kennel Club
  • Microdog ID Ltd (Irish Coursing Club)

Your dog's Microchipping Certificate can only be received via the post and is not to be confused with other paperwork containing a sticker with your dog's microchipping number on it.

Here is an example of the Fido Microchipping Certificate:

Sadly, the reality is that of the many thousands of dogs that go missing each year, it is estimated that less than half of them are reunited with their owners. Don't wait until it's too late. Get your dog microchipped!

Don't forget if you move house or change your telephone number to ensure you update your details with your dog's microchip database provider because he will be lost without you doing this!
